Today morning while I was attending my lecture phone in my pocket vibrated. I ignored as the professor was taking lecture but it vibrated more than 30 times before the lecture concluded. Yes! My anxiety level was high. It was one of my freelancer journalist friends who had sent news in our group. It was attached to a picture showcasing letter. The news was about a teenage girl who was just rescued just before she was about to jump from a bridge down to the railway track in the outskirt of the city that I was residing in. The news was common, as suicide is something that makes the headlines daily. But, what made this news an attention seeker was the suicide note that was recovered from the girl while she was getting counseled by the police. It was enough for make me re think, “is our education system playing with the life of youngsters”?
The suicide note started with lines, “humse padhai nhi ho pa rha h, bhut try kia pr nhi ho pa rha h”. The lines means, “I will be unable to study, I have tried much but I am unable to take it more”. At the first glace it looked like the girls was under tremendous pressure of her board exams but the length of the suicide note was asking me to read it more and more. The matter was much more than that I premeditated. The letter further mentioned that she was in tremendous pressure with no support from her family members. Her father always pressurized her to study hard for IIT and secure more than 95% in the board exams. Further the suicide note also stated that she was always compared to her brothers and taunted for that. Such repeated pressure and incidents that created a sense of depression and lost of faith in life was the second reason that came to light.
Not only the system but our culture has become so. The whole night I was thinking about the lapses that might have led her to take on such extreme step. Reports of NCRB 2015 (National Crime Record Bureau) mentions that every hour a student suicides in India. Between years 2010-15, 39,775 students killed themselves and in 2015 the suicide rate roused up to 8,934. Maharashtra stands at top with 1,230 of 8,934 (14%) followed by Tamil Nadu (955 or 10.6 %) which is among those states of India with highest education rate. The statistics seems humiliating for the country but the reasons for such suicide are more humiliating. Our country focuses more on the marks than knowledge. It is system where a child sees education as a burden as it is a criterion to get job. The country has not been able to maintain the uniformity in the quality of education. The system has burdened the students with pressure but has no formula to deal with that pressure.
The stats and reasons behind the stats reflect that students mainly of age group 17 – 27 are under tremendous pressure. Not only the system but our culture has made the parents more status co oriented rather than knowledge. It is true and genuine that every parent wants success in life for their children. But in the race of the society they ignore the caliber of their own child. The comparison is something common in every house of this country or what we make fun of, “look at Sahrmaji’s son, if he can do it why can’t you?”. But parents forget that every child is born with something special. It’s not only the 95% , seat in IIT/IIM or cracking medical exam that can give child a great future, but chasing own dreams and passion can surely. This is because he will have an internal sense of satisfaction and he will work by heart. I believe that money can buy anything but respect, eternal peace and satisfaction is something that you will have to earn by becoming a better human being. Parents are somewhere losing their part of heart just because of their mentality. But I don’t even blame the parents in a whole because the world has become a sonic space. Things are moving fast and you have to be fast to walk with the world, but, not everything is every ones cup of tea. On the other hand, several other successful fields have developed and people are becoming more successful it in. Both our society and education system needs to be re evaluated in such a manner that it becomes knowledge friendly. I have always criticized the people committing suicide because I consider it as a solution for running away out of a problem or what weak’s do. In this case I had to re shape my mentality. By the grace of god and the alertness of the patrolling team the girl was found before her suicide but the note that she had written was speaking a lot. The burden is tremendous, they are not enjoying their education rather they are doing it for job. I guess this reason is enough to highlight its failure in imparting core values. Parents and close ones need to support them and motivate them to study well rather than pressurizing them. They should counsel their child to know that what all problems they are going through in their life and guide them the solution it. Students should understand that their life is precious for both themselves and their parents. They should learn to chase their own dreams and take stand for themselves. Life is beautiful. You only get it ones. So, try to live it to the fullest. Try to avoid negative thought and focus to your destination in life. For this you will have to focus. The best way to give your life a focus and direction is to define yours goals and the put all the efforts in achieving them. Our education system should be such where a child studies to learn, not just to get passing marks in exams. Time may flow in pace but it is you who will have to get yourself educated. Chase the positives . I remember that Einstein said once, “Education is something that one does not forget when he has forgotten everything that he learnt in his school”
